Where The Fire Used To Be

by Tiger Mimic

/

about

A song about loss and hope, the title refers to an inactive volcano that Jess & Bram hiked up years ago. At the top there was a mist covered lake surrounded by dense rainforest and there was something so mysterious about that place. It was a strange, peaceful contrast to the heat and energy that volcanoes usually bring to mind. Beautiful, but somehow bittersweet. Later, following a personal loss, this image kept coming back to mind. The idea that the lost leave behind bittersweet impressions of themselves throughout your life, a sad and beautiful shadow of the life they once lived, and that sometimes you can see it when you're standing in such a place. A place where the fire used to be.

lyrics

Gardens grow and fade away
And what have we to show?
Flowers for a little while
All planted in a row.
Hours slip free from our grasp
However hard we hold,
The roses and the summer wind
Just stories we once told.

How lucky that we were to stand there at all
Surrounded by the glowing gold of the fall
The whole world starting over again in the spring
Carried on the tiny hollow bones of robins wings.

The meadows where we used to walk
Have lost their flowers to the frost.
They're difficult to look upon
When we know how it was.
But still the air is echoing
With everything that's ever been
And, all the while, promising
Another day will come.

How lucky that we were to stand there at all
Surrounded by the glowing gold of the fall
The whole world starting over again in the spring
Carried on the tiny hollow bones of robins wings.

And at the top we finally see
WHERE THE FIRE USED TO BE
Beneath the water, fast asleep
WHERE THE FIRE USED TO BE
The weary shadows in the deep
WHERE THE FIRE USED TO BE
There forever, out of reach
WHERE THE FIRE USED TO BE.

How lucky that we were to stand there at all
Surrounded by the glowing gold of the fall
The whole world starting over again in the spring
Carried on the tiny hollow bones of robins wings.
Carried on the tiny hollow bones of robins wings.
Carried on the tiny hollow bones of robins wings.
